Alkyl Polyglycosides
Alkyl polyglycosides (APGs) are a class of nonionic surfactants made by reacting fatty alcohols with sugars, typically glucose derived from starch. Their general structure consists of a hydrophobic alkyl chain attached to one or more glycoside (sugar) units, giving them both oil‑compatible and water‑compatible character. This amphiphilic structure allows APGs to reduce surface and interfacial tension, produce foam, and solubilize oils, which are key functions in cleaning and formulation technology.APGs are often highlighted as “green” or environmentally friendly surfactants because both building blocks—fatty alcohols and sugars—are obtained from renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils and plant‑based carbohydrates. They are readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions and typically show low aquatic toxicity. This profile makes them attractive alternatives to some conventional petrochemical‑derived surfactants in applications where environmental impact and sustainability are major concerns. In terms of performance, alkyl polyglycosides provide excellent detergency, wetting, and dispersing properties. They are effective at removing particulate and oily soils from hard surfaces and fibers. One of their prominent advantages is exceptionally mild interaction with skin and eyes. APGs tend to have low irritation potential and are often used to improve the mildness profile of a formulation when blended with more aggressive surfactants. Their compatibility with anionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants allows flexible formulation design and can enhance foam quality and stability in mixed systems.Foaming behavior is another important attribute. APGs generally exhibit rich, stable foam even in the presence of oils or soils and maintain performance over a broad pH range and in hard water. This makes them suitable for household cleaning products such as dishwashing liquids, all‑purpose cleaners, and hard surface cleaners, as well as for personal care products including shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, and hand washes. In personal care, they are valued for providing mild cleansing, good skin feel, and biodegradability, aligning with trends toward more natural and gentle products.Beyond home and personal care, APGs are employed in industrial and institutional cleaners, agricultural adjuvants, textile processing, and certain formulations in the coatings and construction sectors. Their ability to act as wetting agents, dispersants, and emulsifiers is used to improve the processing and performance of many products. From a formulation standpoint, the properties of alkyl polyglycosides can be tuned by varying the length of the alkyl chain and the average degree of polymerization of the sugar moiety. Shorter chains may enhance wetting, while longer chains can improve foam and detergency. Their good stability in acidic and alkaline conditions, combined with favorable safety and environmental characteristics, has led to widespread adoption of APGs as versatile, high‑performance surfactants in modern, sustainable formulations.
