Flame Retardant DEEP
Flame retardant DEEP (diethyl ethylphosphonate) is an organophosphorus additive widely used to improve fire resistance in polymers and other combustible materials. It functions primarily in the condensed phase, promoting char formation and reducing the release of flammable gases during combustion. This compound is valued for its balance of flame-retardant efficiency, compatibility with various resins, and relatively low impact on mechanical properties.DEEP is a clear, low-viscosity liquid with good thermal stability and miscibility in many organic systems. It can be incorporated into formulations for rigid and flexible polyurethane foams, epoxy resins, unsaturated polyester, phenolic resins, and certain thermoplastics. In these formulations, it can act as an acid source, promoting the formation of a protective carbonaceous foam layer when exposed to high temperatures. This barrier insulates the underlying substrate, slows heat transfer, and limits the access of oxygen to the material surface.From a performance standpoint, DEEP helps materials comply with various fire safety standards used in building, transportation, and electronics sectors. Typical targets include improved classifications in vertical and horizontal burn tests, enhanced LOI values, and reductions in peak heat release rate.
